Ladakh is a great place with a lovely tradition of being a place with a lot of travel interests. This has been the most interesting place to visit and even today invokes the interest and the curiosity of all those who come here. This is a great tourist spot for the tourist simply because it fills his travel palate and also because it has a simple charm that enchants the tourist.

The monastery of Shey is a place where the tourists normally go while on a Ladakh tour and this is located on a hill around 15 km from Leh.  This was earlier the place where the royal family resided and where the pre Tibetan kings had their power. There is a beautiful statue of Buddha here made of copper and is around 7.5 metre high. Plated with gold this is the largest of its kind that has been installed here in this lovely monastery.

Then there is the Thikse Monastery which is a beautifully constructed Gompa. The architectural elegance of this structure is to be seen to be believed. The temples in the Gompa have images, wall paintings and stupas of the Buddha and these really look exquisite.

The Hemis Monastery is another monastery that is a great architectural feat. This is in fact, the wealthiest and the biggest Gompa here in the region of Ladakh. There is a famous festival held here annually so the monastery is popular across the world. The festival that is celebrated here is in memory of the Guru Padma Sambhava’s birth anniversary. This also has the largest Thanka which is normally unfurled once in 12 years. Constructed in the year 1630, this was built in the time of the Sengge Namgyal who was a famous ruler in Ladakh. The monastery flourished under this royal dynasty very well and the fact that the dynasty supported the Drugkpa Sect really helped. The monastery is divided into the Main temple on the left hand side and the Assembly Hall on the right hand side.

Ladakh tours are always interesting and enchanting.
