It is the largest coral reef in the world, situated parallel to the coast of Queensland. It stretches from the coastal town of Bundaberg, up past the tip of Cape York Australia, for almost 2,000km.

This stupendous wonder of the modern era comprises of, billions upon billions of living coral polyps, which are actually microscopic organisms. The Great Barrier Reef is world’s busiest marine life sanctuary because of its diverse population of living creatures. The Great Barrier Reef is of such pristine condition that it was listed by the World Heritage Trust as a protected site and is therefore managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority which protects the area from many human and environmental issues to ensure that its beauty is maintained for many generations to come.

The Wet Tropics World Heritage listed Rainforest on one side and the Great Barrier Reef on the other makes it a perfect destination.  There is no other place in the world which offers such diverse attraction situated in such close proximity. The tourist can explore the wide combination of lush, unspoiled beauty of the Daintree Rainforest onshore and the marine wonders of the Great Barrier Reef offshore.

Researchers say that the Great Barrier Reef was founded about 20,000 years ago. Due to the global warming, sea levels started to rise and the coral grew continuously atop an ever descending land ridge which resulted in the magnificent array of coral structures which form the Great Barrier Reef. The varied colors of the reef’s fish and other marine life will astound the visitor with color permutations that artists haven’t even dreamed of.

The Great Barrier Reef is sprinkled with about 900 islands of different dimensions that support a variety of flora, fauna and bird life. The larger islands have been converted into holiday destinations. There are many luxurious resorts that have come up on this island that offers first class facilities. This has increased the number of tourist that visits this island to have a view of this natural wonder. It also attracts a large number of divers and snorkelers who are keen to explore this huge undersea wonderland that harbors a maze of marine creatures. The water sports aficionados can enjoy a vast range of water activities because of the magnitude and diversity of the reef. If you do not like to dive, you can stretch out in the sun for a suntan or, do a spot of fishing or just relax and take in the beauty of the surrounds.
